While this year’s conference has been wrapped up, the information on this year’s presentations is vital and interesting. This year’s topics addressed critical areas of health and safety that stretch beyond traditional issues as well as key matters that are at the centre of many safety related discussions across Ontario.
Awards
This year’s conference kicked off with the social event Thursday October 3 where several awards were presented. New this year was the addition of IHSA’s transportation-related awards, which were handed out at the event.
The IHSA Ken Hellawell Transportation Award was presented to the family of Nick Nicholson, who received the award posthumously. Nick may be remembered as a vibrant member of the Hamilton-Niagara Fleet Safety Council Chapter and one of the founding members of the organization that has become the Fleet Safety Council.
Along with this special award, several transportation firms received honours for their efforts in improving health and safety. The IHSA Transportation Achievement Awards are based on the firm’s experience data for the three years immediately preceding the year of the award. They are given to member firms which have operated with a lost-time injury (LTI) frequency below the overall rate group LTI frequency average each year for three consecutive for each category.
Chapter award
The Toronto chapter of the Fleet Safety Council awarded its annual Safety Professional of the Year award to Mike Trace. Mike has been that chapters administrator and has recently retired from IHSA.
