FSC and PMTC Issue Joint Letter Regarding Automated Speed Enforcement Cameras

The Fleet Safety Council (FSC), with the support of the Private Motor Truck Council of Canada (PMTC), have issued a joint letter to the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and the Office of the Premier. The letter strongly urges the provincial government to reconsider the recent ban on automated speed enforcement (ASE) programs. Based on a motion at the FSC Annual General Meeting, held on October 23rd 2025, the letter argues that the decommissioning of the ASE cameras represents a significant retreat from the province’s previously commendable commitment to improving road safety.

The joint letter emphasizes that available research indicates ASE programs are not “cash grabs” but are instead highly effective tools for reducing risk. Research data cited from Toronto Metropolitan University and Sick Kids Hospital shows that ASE programs have reduced speeding in school zones by 45 percent. Specifically, vehicles traveling more than 20 km/h over the limit were reduced by 87 percent.
